Unique Initiatives, Unique Differences
KSI has begun a campaign to bring light to dark schools, workshops, and homes throughout the Nairobi slums of Mathare and Kibera. We have already conducted two training sessions in region, to train and motivate local youth leaders on the amazing project. Simply put, the 2 liter bottle solar lamp project is an easy, inexpensive, yet very effective technique that provides a waterproof natural light collection point. Once the unit is installed, natural light from the sun is pulled through the bottle and defracted around the room, bringing sustainable, no-cost light to much needed facilities.
Projected Impact: 20 rooms per project
Project Cost: $50 per project
KSI is currently planning for another medical camp, which will be held in the remote village of Wongonyi, Kenya, in spring 2012. We'll be focusing on providing service for dental, deworming, diabetes, blood pressure, and diagnosis of general ailments at the Mwambirwa Health Center. Our next medical camp will be the first of its kind in the region and is greatly needed.
Unfortunately, due to customs requirements, we cannot accecpt physical donations, unless: 1. You currently live in Kenya and would like to donate supplies directly to KSI, or 2. You live in the U.S. and can donate supplies directly to Western Carolina University (WCU) university group, so that they can bring the supplies over personally. Please note, that all remaining machines, tests, and medicines will be donated to the regional medical center, serving the five villages of Wongonyi. Thank you for your support!
We Are Still Searching For: Glucose testers, strips and lancets, digital blood pressure machines, digital thermometers, malaria test kits, and microscopes
Projected Impact: 300+ patients
Project Cost: $1500 for all project expenses
In order to bring much needed light and power to the remote areas of Kenya, we have developed a solar/wind development project that is aimed at meeting the power needs of those living off the grid. Each solar project is priced to serve one household with light and charging needs, while each wind/solar combination kit is priced to serve a group of houses. Both projects include a solar panel and/or a wind generator, along with four energy saving DC lights, battery (power storage), control panel (to protect the battery from overcharge), inverter (for mobile charging), and one (1) plug.
Projected Impact: 1 isolated home/5 closely-situated homes
Project Locations: Taita Region, Mathare Slum (Nairobi), Kibera Slum (Nairobi)
Project Cost: $600 for 1 isolated home/$1000 for a group of 5 homes
Notes: If you are interested in supporting this project in either the Mathare or Kibera Slums, please contact us for alternate project costs and projected impact. Within Mathare and Kibera, we will be able to reach a greater number of homes for more or less the same cost.
We at KSI are very excited about raising funds for rural Taita's first green house, business development project! For those of us used to working with greenhouses, we realize the potential such a venture can provide for those practicing sustainable farming. In the case of the rural villages that we work in, a greenhouse would completely transform many lives, reducing the amount of labor needed to grow foods, while doubling or even trippling the harvest's potential. We plan on installing a certified greenhouse, similar to the convex roof version above. Once funded, we will initiate the project with a responsible and motivated group of young community leaders in area, so that they will be fully responsible for the upkeep and harvest of their crops. They will be provided with full training and support by proven agriculturalists from the region, with regular visits by KSI representatives to ensure the project is operating at its full potential.
Projected Impact: 20+ direct impact, 60-100 individuals from secondary impact (family members of the agricultural group)
Project Cost: $1500 per greenhouse
KSI helps support and source for volunteers for three orphanges in Nairobi. Each of the orphanages provide shelter and/or education for an average of 150 students, with little to no financial resources for their supplies, incomes, or upkeep. The teachers managing the orphanages work on a volunteer basis, using their own resources to maintain their efforts. Your support would be greatly appreciated and will go a long way in ensuring their future in their communities.
Locations: Mathare and Kibera Slums, Nairobi
Projected Impact: Varies on the orphanage, but an average of 150 students and teachers will benefit from your support.
Project Cost: $50 suggested donation
